NVIDIA Cuts Production of RTX 4070, a Sign of Poor Demand?

The release of a new graphics card should indicate soaring sales, especially for midrange GPUs like the 70 series from NVIDIA, which are affordable for many potential buyers. Unfortunately, it seems that the release of this 70 series graphics card, the RTX 4070, is not going as smoothly as expected.

The RTX 4070 was recently released with a suggested retail price of $599 in the US market. However, this price is still considered too high for some consumers who have been eyeing this GPU for a long time.

NVIDIA Cuts Production of RTX 4070 Due to Poor Demand

Rumors suggest that NVIDIA will reduce the production of the RTX 4070 due to poor performance in the market. According to a source from China’s Board Channel Forums, NVIDIA will reduce the supply of this graphics card to several of its AIC partners for a month.

This implies the earlier rumor that the latest graphics card from NVIDIA is not very popular in the market. Inventory in several major stores also shows that there is still a lot left in stock, indicating that few people are interested in this GPU.

Price Too Close to RTX 3080

The price of the RTX 4070 is too close to that of the RTX 3080, which is one of the reasons why gamers and potential buyers prefer the previous generation graphics card. In terms of performance, the RTX 4070 has a value that is not significantly different from the flagship series of the previous generation, the RTX 3080.

The only advantages offered are exclusive technology present in the Ada Lovelace GPU, namely DLSS 3 and better RT capabilities. The 4070 is also more efficient than the 3080, and even the renowned overclocker, der8auer, recommends buying the 4070 instead of the 3080 solely for power efficiency reasons. This is reasonable as he himself lives in Germany, which is currently experiencing a rise in electricity prices due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

NVIDIA will have to consider cutting the price if they want this GPU to be purchased by gamers. If not, the RTX 3080 is still the best choice in the same price range if you’re eyeing a green team GPU.
