AMD’s Radeon drivers have a well-known history of performance and stability issues, and the latest driver update, AMD Radeon Adrenalin 23.7.2, seems to be no exception. Reports have surfaced that this particular driver is causing performance problems specifically on mobile GPUs.
One of the significant issues users are facing is related to the driver changing the branding of the internal Radeon 780M GPU to Radeon 760M, resulting in a substantial performance downgrade. This not only affects the overall performance of the GPU but also disrupts the system’s functionality.
The complaints from users go beyond just GPU performance. Many have experienced unexpected disconnections of various internal and external devices, such as fingerprint readers, Xbox 360 controllers, and audio devices, further exacerbating the frustration caused by the faulty driver update.
Digital Foundry, a renowned technology testing and analysis platform, responded to these reports and conducted its own investigation. They confirmed that devices equipped with the Ryzen 7 7840U, like AYANEO devices, were also affected by this driver update. These devices experienced a significant 33% drop in gaming performance, specifically noticeable in games like Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition, where the frame rate plummeted from 33 FPS to 22 FPS.
Interestingly, it seems that the problematic AMD driver is isolated to Radeon GPUs in mobile versions, as users with desktop systems have not reported encountering similar issues. Nonetheless, the impact on mobile users has been quite significant, prompting AMD to address and resolve the performance and stability concerns promptly.
