In a recent development, there have been reports of malicious actors introducing a counterfeit Signal App into the Google Play Store. These cybercriminals are allegedly associated with China. Security experts at ESET have identified these threat actors as GREF and have even noted the presence of the fraudulent Signal App on the Samsung Galaxy Store, under the name “Signal Plus Messenger.”
According to Lukas Stefanko, a researcher at ESET, the primary aim of these deceptive apps is to eavesdrop on the communications of the authentic Signal App. The genuine Signal App enables users to seamlessly link their mobile app with their desktop or Apple iPad. The fake Signal apps have ingeniously devised a method to automatically establish a connection between the compromised device and the attacker’s Signal network. Consequently, this granted them access to all the communications transpiring within the app.
#Google and #Apple charge app developers 30% of their earnings to allegedly vet for security risks.
And yet, a fake @Signal app has found its way into the @GooglePlay app store.

In light of this incident, reports from Proton Privacy have revealed that Google and Apple impose a substantial fee of up to 30% of developers’ earnings for security vetting purposes.
Proton Privacy took to the social media platform X to voice their dissatisfaction with this situation. They expressed concerns about the fact that, despite the significant fees charged by Google and Apple for security assessments, a counterfeit Signal app managed to infiltrate the Google Play Store.
Proton Privacy further asserted that tech giants, by virtue of their monopolistic dominance, tend to stifle innovation and suppress competition rather than fostering enhanced security.
