Is HMD Global Preparing to Launch Its Own Smartphone Brand, Not Nokia’s?

As of now, the Nokia brand continues to fall under the jurisdiction of HMD Global, which frequently refers to itself as the “home of Nokia phones.” However, a significant shift may be on the horizon, as HMD Global has expressed keen interest in establishing its distinct smartphone brand, bearing the label “HMD,” effectively separating it from Nokia.

This intriguing development was unveiled by HMD Global’s CEO and leader, Jean-Francois Baril, through a LinkedIn post. In this post, he divulged that they are actively gearing up to create the HMD smartphone brand, which will constitute a crucial component of their future smartphone product portfolio.

Additionally, he emphasized that HMD’s commitment extends to ongoing design and development of technology aligned precisely with user needs, with a focus on enhancing user experiences and meeting the evolving demands of society.

Crucially, this shift doesn’t signify HMD Global’s abandonment of the Nokia brand. Rather, they intend to maintain their efforts in developing Nokia phones alongside their new venture. The goal is harmonious coexistence for both brands, and in the future, consumers can anticipate exciting collaborations with “new and captivating partners.”

Within the same LinkedIn post, HMD Global proudly underlined their status as a rapidly growing 5G smartphone manufacturer, showcasing consistent year-on-year growth. A significant contributor to this growth has been the refreshed Nokia phones launched in the past year. Now, the company stands poised to independently enter the smartphone market, with a vision to forge a fresh telecommunications landscape attuned to the needs of the community.
