Still Manufactured by Samsung, Google’s Tensor G4 Lacks Significant Upgrades

Google is in the early stages of developing its next-generation chipset, the Tensor G4, which is slated for use in the forthcoming Pixel 9 Series smartphones, expected to hit the market in 2024.

Prior to this, Google is set to launch the Pixel 8 Series later this year, with an official release date already confirmed for October 4, 2023. It is widely anticipated that the Pixel 8 lineup will be powered by the Tensor G3 chipset.

While the Tensor G3 has yet to be released, and its precise performance remains unknown, reports suggest that Google has already commenced work on its successor, the Tensor G4. However, it’s worth noting that the Tensor G4 is not expected to introduce significant improvements over its predecessor.

Google is said to be collaborating with Samsung System LSI to develop the Tensor G4, which will be based on the Exynos 2400 platform. In contrast, the Tensor G3 is built upon the Exynos 2300, a chipset that has not yet been released. Remarkably, despite being sourced from Samsung, there appear to be no substantial differences between the two.

Transitioning to TSMC in 2025

While Pixel devices may boast unique software features not found in other Android phones, their hardware performance, specifically the Tensor chipset, is perceived as lagging behind.

As a result, Google has plans to transition production from Samsung to TSMC in 2025 for the Pixel 10 Series, featuring the Tensor G5 chipset. Notably, Google intends to undertake the development of this chipset in-house, a departure from the previous-generation Tensor, which relied on Samsung Exynos as its foundation.
