AMD Announces Ryzen Z1 Series, Chipset for Handheld Gaming Consoles

AMD has announced a new chipset series called Ryzen Z1, specially developed for powerful next-generation handheld gaming consoles. The chipset comes in two versions: Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme, based on Zen 4 architecture and RDNA 3 GPU.

AMD Ryzen Z1 features 6 cores / 12 threads, with a 22MB cache and 4 compute units on the RDNA 3 GPU. AMD claims that the Ryzen Z1 chipset can offer graphics capabilities of up to 2.8 teraflops.

Meanwhile, the top-of-the-line AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme has 8 cores / 16 threads and a 24MB cache. It is equipped with 12 compute units on the RDNA 3 GPU, offering a performance of 8.6 teraflops.

Overall, with these specifications, AMD says both can play popular games at 1080p resolution on low settings. This is quite satisfying considering that handheld gaming console screens won’t be as big as computer screens.

In addition, AMD also provides support for USB 4 and LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X memory types. There are also AMD’s latest features such as AMD Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) upscaling, Radeon Chill, Radeon Image Sharpening, and AMD Link.
