AMD’s Video Encoding Capability Still Not Optimal

Previously, we discussed potential issues with the drivers of AMD’s red camp. Many were hoping for improvements, but it turns out that’s not the case. This is also true for AMD’s video encoding capability, which unfortunately still lags behind competitors even this year.

AMD’s Video Encoding Capability Still Not Mature

Despite being hailed as the best VGA, a VGA is not only used for gaming alone. Among them are artificial intelligence, professional-grade applications, including encoding and decoding that are still closely related to high-end VGA.

One of the hopes of red camp fans is to improve AMD’s Video Encoding Capability to be adequate for everyday use.

This is based on a test conducted by Tom’s Hardware team, where they compared an integrated Intel processor to AMD’s Video Encoding Capability.

Surprisingly, the results were quite shocking. AMD’s encoding and decoding abilities appear to be below the average achieved by competitors. It is safe to say that AMD’s video encoding capability is still not mature.

Encoding and Decoding Performance Test Results

Actually, the ability to perform encoding and decoding is a feature that is not really needed unless we are only playing games. However, it is strange to see that the Video Encoding VGA AMD’s capabilities, especially in the mid-range and higher, are inferior to the newer players.

As seen in the table above, the encoding capabilities at 1080P (AVC/H.264) seem to struggle to keep up with the Intel Arc A770’s capabilities. There is a score difference of up to twenty percent between the RX 5700 XT and RX 6900 XT.

In another example, the encoding capabilities at 1080P (HEVC/H.265) from the previous two VGA’s still cannot beat the blue camp. The difference is quite small indeed for the RX 7900 XTX, but as much as thirty percent for the RX 6900 XT.

NVIDIA’s Encoding and Decoding Capabilities are Not Much Different

In some cases, especially when encoding and decoding HEVC/H.265, it turns out that the Video Encoding VGA AMD’s capabilities are racing each other with the green camp. Where the RX 7900 XTX’s abilities are not that bad because its capabilities are still above the RTX 3090.
