Android Find My Device Can Now Track People – Is It Safe?

There’s no denying that Android’s Find My Device feature has been incredibly useful. But Google isn’t stopping there. The company is continuously exploring new features to make life easier—or at least, that’s the idea. One of the latest developments? The ability to track people.

Find My Device Gets a People-Tracking Feature

If you’re a Google Pixel 9 series user, the March update might leave you either impressed or a little unsettled. Google has introduced a people-tracking feature to Find My Device, which was previously only used for locating lost smartphones or Bluetooth tags.

This new feature is strictly opt-in, meaning it only works if users voluntarily share their location with friends or family. On one hand, it’s undeniably useful—whether for meeting up with someone or ensuring a loved one’s safety.

However, it also raises serious privacy concerns. The idea that our real-time location can be so easily tracked through our devices might make some people uncomfortable. Even Apple’s Find My network—known for its robust security—has faced exploits in the past, proving that no system is entirely foolproof.

Safety Measures in Place

Fortunately, Google understands these concerns and has implemented several safety measures. One of them is an alert system that notifies users when they are being tracked. Additionally, users can disable the feature at any time if they feel uneasy.

For now, the system seems secure—but as with any technology, all it takes is one major security breach for the entire world to question its reliability. What do you think? Is this a step forward, or a privacy nightmare in the making?
