Apple last launched a new iPad Mini in 2021 with the sixth generation. However, it seems that for the next generation we will have to wait a little longer, namely in 2026, with Apple embedding OLED display panel technology on its mini tablet.
Reporting from ZDNet Korea, Samsung Display has started receiving orders for 8-inch OLED display panels from Apple for the iPad Mini. Development has now begun and samples have been sent to Apple in April, with mass production scheduled for 2025.
In addition, the iPad Air is also rumored to get an OLED display panel upgrade in the same year. However, for the iPad Air, it is said that there could be a delay until 2027. The OLED panel on the iPad Air is believed to remain 11 inches, while the OLED on the iPad Mini is predicted to increase from 8.3 inches to 8.7 inches.
Apple itself debuted OLED display panels in its tablet lineup by introducing the iPad Pro not long ago. The Cupertino giant uses tandem technology, aka two layers of LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) OLED for a brighter and more power-efficient display.
However, for the iPad Mini and iPad Air, it is likely to use only one layer with an LTPS (low-temperature polycrystalline silicon) OLED panel. This means that the screens on both tablets may not be as bright as the iPad Pro.
