Apple is reportedly gearing up for a massive visual overhaul in iOS 19 and iPadOS 19. The upcoming update will bring significant changes across the system, including icons, buttons, windows, menus, and built-in apps. According to insider Mark Gurman, the new design will take inspiration from VisionOS, the operating system powering Apple’s mixed reality devices.
If these reports are accurate, iOS 19 and iPadOS 19 icons will feature a more modern look, possibly adopting circular frames, transparency effects, and subtle shadows to create a more immersive feel. Currently, iOS and iPadOS use a skeuomorphic design approach, which mimics real-world objects in digital form.
For instance, the default YouTube icon in iOS resembles a vintage 1950s television with oversized volume and channel knobs. Similarly, the Notes app icon resembles a classic notepad, while the Calendar app looks like a physical desk calendar. However, with iOS 19—codenamed “Lucky“—Apple is reportedly planning its most significant design revamp since iOS 7 in 2013.
This redesign aims to create a more cohesive user experience across Apple’s ecosystem, especially with the growing influence of VisionOS. Apple is expected to unveil iOS 19 and iPadOS 19 at WWDC in June, with a public release slated for September alongside the launch of the iPhone 17 series.
