Instagram is looking to expand the duration of its short video feature, Reels, to a whopping 10 minutes. This move mirrors the strategy employed by TikTok in 2022 when they decided to allow longer video content on their platform.
According to a screenshot shared by the well-known leaker Alessandro Paluzzi, the current video limit for Instagram Reels stands at 90 seconds, equivalent to 3 minutes. However, this duration is set to be extended to a maximum of 10 minutes in the near future. Engadget has confirmed this information, and it’s been directly acknowledged by Meta, the parent company of Instagram.
Meta has revealed that they are indeed conducting internal testing to enable longer Reels videos. Unfortunately, these tests are not accessible to external users, and there’s no official announcement regarding the release date for these extended 10-minute Reels.

Following in TikTok’s Footsteps
It’s evident that Instagram is taking a page from TikTok’s playbook with this move. TikTok, initially a platform dedicated to short video content, expanded its offerings in 2022 by allowing users to upload videos lasting up to 10 minutes.
Looking at the broader landscape of social media, platforms are evolving into comprehensive, all-in-one hubs for various types of content. The days when Instagram was primarily a platform for sharing photos, TikTok for bite-sized videos, YouTube for longer video content, and Twitter for text-based updates have now evolved into a more versatile social media ecosystem.
