Google has taken a significant step in enhancing user safety by introducing an anti-stalking feature for AirTag devices on Android smartphones. Originally announced at the Google I/O 2023 event in May, this long-awaited feature is finally making its way to Android users, providing them with valuable protection against potential stalkers.
Known as “unknown tracker alerts,” this feature serves as a watchful companion, notifying users whenever an unfamiliar Bluetooth tracker seems to be following their movements. The primary aim is to prevent any unauthorized tracking and protect users from potential privacy breaches.
The rollout of “unknown tracker alerts” is currently available for Android devices running version 6.0 and above through Google Play Services. Although it initially supports Apple’s AirTags, Google has assured users that they will extend compatibility to other tracker devices from various brands in due course.
With this new feature in place, Android users will receive timely notifications if an unknown tracker is detected in their vicinity. These notifications not only act as an alert but also provide essential details about the unidentified tracker, such as its origin point on the map and, in some cases, even information about the device’s owner, including the last four digits of their phone number.
To further empower users in managing these potential tracking situations, Google has incorporated additional functionalities. By tapping on the alert notification, users can take advantage of options like “Play sound” to help locate the hidden tracker. Furthermore, Google offers step-by-step instructions on how to disable the tracker, ensuring users have control over their privacy and safety.
Moreover, Android users have the flexibility to conduct manual scans. By accessing the “Unknown tracker alerts” section in Settings > Safety & emergency, they can initiate a quick scan to identify any unfamiliar trackers nearby. This proactive approach empowers users to stay vigilant and take necessary actions if they find any cause for concern.
In an ever-connected world, where privacy and security are paramount, Google’s anti-stalking feature for AirTag devices on Android provides a reassuring layer of protection for users. As technology continues to evolve, these proactive measures demonstrate Google’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its users and promoting a safer digital environment for all.
