TrendForce has recently released its research findings regarding global smartphone sales in the second half of 2023. According to their report, this period marks the lowest point in global smartphone sales in the past decade, encompassing both individual quarters and the combined figures for the first half of this year.
In a more detailed breakdown, TrendForce reveals that global smartphone sales in Q1 2023 experienced a steep decline of 20%. This decline moderated slightly in Q2, with a 6.6% reduction, resulting in a total of 272 million smartphones manufactured during that time frame. The cumulative sales for the second half of the year reached 522 million units, reflecting a significant 13.3% decrease compared to the first half of 2022.
Factors Behind the Decline
TrendForce points to three key factors contributing to the global smartphone sales slump during this period. Firstly, there’s the failure to stimulate demand for smartphones in the Chinese market. Additionally, demographic trends in developing markets have yet to generate substantial demand for smartphones. Finally, the persistent economic weaknesses have curtailed consumer spending, consequently weakening production during the first half of the year more than initially anticipated.
Market Leaders
In terms of market leadership, Samsung maintains its top position in the global smartphone market, with a production volume of 53.9 million units and a market share just shy of 20%. Meanwhile, Apple secures the second position with 42 million units produced and a market share of 15.4%. Notably, Xiaomi saw a significant production increase of 32.1% compared to the Q1 period, allowing the brand to surpass Oppo, which occupies the fourth position with a production of 33.6 million units.
