Google has made an official announcement regarding the discontinuation of Play Services support for Android KitKat 4.4, effective from August 2023.
In their statement on the Android Developer Blog, Google revealed that API levels 19 and 20 will no longer receive updates for the latest APK versions after version 23.30.99. As a result, support for KitKat 4.4 will be formally halted, rendering it unable to access various updated applications in the future.
The decision to end support for Android KitKat 4.4 is not unexpected, considering its initial introduction back in October 2013, making it nearly a decade old. With the current adoption rate of this operating system at less than 1% of the total number of Android mobile devices, Google has deemed it appropriate to discontinue support.
This move by Google aims to ensure that the majority of users are using devices with up-to-date operating systems, benefiting from the latest security features, and enjoying optimal app compatibility. If you happen to be among the few who still have devices running on Android KitKat 4.4, it might be time to consider upgrading to a newer version to continue receiving support and access to the latest app developments.
