Google Photos on Android 14 Supports Ultra HDR Format

Google unveiled a groundbreaking Ultra HDR format alongside the release of Android 14 Beta 2 back in May. This format is designed to embrace 10-bit HDR imagery and is fully compatible with standard JPEG images.

With this innovation, the system gracefully accommodates SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) images on screens that lack HDR support. However, when viewed on HDR-enabled screens, these images exhibit more vivid colors and heightened contrast.

Among the pioneers in adopting Google’s new Ultra HDR format is none other than Google’s very own creation, Google Photos. The recent version, 6.51.0.561138754, reveals several strings that unequivocally confirm Ultra HDR support.

It’s important to note that this remarkable feature isn’t exclusive to Google Photos. Third-party applications are poised to harness this capability once Android 14 is officially rolled out.

This feature is nothing short of intriguing as it empowers users to maximize the full potential of the latest smartphone displays and camera setups. It enables them to showcase photos in exceptional quality while retaining the familiar JPEG format.

On the flip side, users can conveniently share photos, even those in the Ultra HDR format, through Google Photos links to smartphones equipped with screens supporting only the SDR format. Yet, it’s worth mentioning that the image quality won’t rival that of an HDR screen but will align with the screen capabilities of the recipient’s smartphone.
