According to a recent report published by IDC, global tablet shipments have decreased by 19.1% from last year for the first quarter of 2023, with a total shipment of 30.7 million units.
IDC suggests that the decline in shipment volume in Q1 2023 indicates that vendors are trying to clear their product stocks first in order to launch newer models in the future, leading to lower tablet shipments in this period compared to the previous year.
Not only tablets, but Chromebooks also seem to have experienced the same decline, up to 31% for Q1 2023. The smaller decline in shipments is due to vendors increasing their orders in anticipation of a rise in Chrome OS licensing costs in the second half of 2023.
As for the tablet brands that still dominate the market share in this period, there’s Apple with a market share of 32.5%, followed by Samsung with a market share of 23.1%, and Huawei in third place with a market share of 6.6%.
