Instagram and Facebook Now Enable Video Calls with Avatars

Meta recently introduced a unique feature for Instagram and Facebook. Users on both platforms can now make video calls using avatars they have created beforehand.

With this feature, users no longer need to activate their cameras during video calls, but communication will still be maintained as their expressions, facial movements, and lip movements will be represented in real-time through the avatars.

Users can also choose unique animal-shaped avatars such as cats, dogs, owls, and more. This feature has been released for Android and iOS devices through Messenger (Facebook) and Instagram.

In addition to real-time avatar video calls, Meta also announced several other new features related to avatars. This includes animated avatar stickers that can be used in Stories, Reels, comments, or direct messages.

Meta plans to make avatar creation easier on their platforms by simply taking a selfie. Currently, avatar creation is still done manually by adjusting the settings.

Avatars have been a significant focus for Meta as they will be part of their ambitious project, the Metaverse. Despite the recent decline in the popularity of the Metaverse compared to AI, it seems that its development is still ongoing, although not as widely recognized as before.
