Intel’s Client Hardware Roadmap & “Meteor Lake” Ultra CPU: Unveiling at Innovation 2023

Intel’s forthcoming Innovation event has revealed its session schedule, spanning two days in September. An intriguing highlight among these sessions is the dedicated talk titled “Intel Client Hardware Roadmap and the Rise of AI.” This talk is anticipated to provide intricate insights into the much-anticipated Ultra CPU Core, codenamed Meteor Lake.

With speculation surrounding the release of the Meteor Lake CPU by year-end, the Innovation event emerges as the prime platform for this revelation. This annual gathering traditionally serves as Intel’s showcase for its client-oriented products, encompassing both desktop and mobile series, along with unveiling the new Arc graphics line. This year’s event is poised to cast a spotlight on the 14th Gen Core desktop and mobile CPUs, as well as the forthcoming Core Ultra CPUs tailored explicitly for laptops (at present).

In an engaging development, the Innovation session catalog confirms that one segment will be entirely dedicated to an in-depth exploration of the Meteor Lake architecture. Furthermore, attendees can look forward to the unveiling of an updated roadmap with a pronounced emphasis on AI. Notably, Meteor Lake stands as an influential client architecture, integrating AI acceleration cores referred to as VPUs (derived from Movidius Vision Processing Blocks). These cores will cater to power-efficient AI inference tasks.

While Intel has offered some insights into the Meteor Lake architecture, essential specifics, including SKUs, core counts, clock speeds, and performance metrics, remain undisclosed. Nonetheless, it’s understood that Intel’s novel hybrid and multi-die design will embrace a fresh nomenclature coined as Core Ultra. Correspondingly, SKUs outside the Ultra category within the same series are projected to rely on the Raptor Lake silicon.

Significantly, the Meteor Lake compute tile will leverage Intel’s “Intel 4” process node, anchoring the Redwood Cove (Core) and Crestmont (Atom) cores. Leaked information suggests that this architecture will house a maximum of 6 Performance cores and 8 Efficient cores. Further augmenting its capabilities, 2 LPE cores will find their place on the SoC die. Additionally, a notable enhancement is foreseen within the graphics domain, featuring a configuration accommodating up to 8 Xe Cores. The Intel Innovation event is set to commence on September 19th, promising a convergence of innovation and unveiling of technological milestones.
