In a recent incident, an iPhone manufacturing facility located in Chennai, India, went up in flames. This factory, owned by the Taiwanese manufacturing giant Pegatron, suffered a fire incident on a Sunday midnight, local time.
Fortunately, Pegatron has reported that no injuries or fatalities occurred as a result of the fire, and there was no substantial damage to their assets. However, the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation by the relevant authorities. As a precautionary measure, Pegatron has advised its factory workers to temporarily halt operations until further notice.
Currently, the Pegatron assembly facility in India is actively producing both the iPhone 14 Series and the newly launched iPhone 15 Series, which made its debut just last week. The impact of this temporary work stoppage on production remains uncertain at this time.
Pegatron has been a crucial manufacturing partner for Apple in India since September of the previous year. Their contribution accounts for approximately 10% of iPhone production in the country.
Additionally, Pegatron is currently in discussions regarding the establishment of a second factory, which is planned to be situated near their existing facility in Chennai, India.
It’s worth noting that Apple has previously engaged other electronic manufacturers like Wistron and Foxconn to assemble iPhones in India since 2017. This decision aligns with the Indian government’s initiatives to promote local manufacturing, strengthening Apple’s presence and production capabilities in the country.
