MediaTek will create a competitor for Apple M3

Competition in the semiconductor industry is becoming increasingly tight. Even reportedly, MediaTek will create a competitor for Apple M3.

MediaTek is designing chipsets for various Chromebooks and budget laptops, and the company has not yet released a processor that can compete with Apple’s silicon.

While MediaTek is mainly focused on developing mobile CPUs, the latest report shows that the company is now shifting its attention to high-end laptop processors. According to a tipster, MediaTek is working on a new SoC that features four Cortex-X4 cores and four Cortex-A720 cores. This chip is expected to go head-to-head with upcoming offerings like the Apple M3 and Qualcomm Oryon.

According to Digital Chat Station, MediaTek may have a powerful laptop CPU in development. While the marketing name of the chipset is not yet known, it is said to feature four Hunter ELP (Cortex-X4) and four Hunter (Cortex-A720) cores without efficiency cores (via Notebookcheck).

For reference, Cortex-X4 is a new high-performance core announced by Arm in 2022. Cortex-X4 is designed to offer up to 30% better performance than the previous generation Cortex-X3 core.

The chipset could be the next iteration in the Kompanio series that MediaTek has planned for Windows laptops, and it may even come with a ray-tracing-capable GPU.

If MediaTek is successful in developing this new SoC, it could emerge as a major competitor to the upcoming Apple M3 and Qualcomm Oryon. The chip would provide a significant performance boost compared to MediaTek’s dim laptop chipsets, positioning it well compared to the latest chips from Intel and AMD.
