Meta has officially introduced its latest Mixed Reality headset, the Meta Quest 3. This new iteration stands out with its sleeker and more refined design, marking a notable departure from its predecessor.
The Quest 3 elevates the immersive experience with an enhanced display, boasting an impressive resolution of 2208 x 2064 pixels and a 90Hz refresh rate. Notably, it offers an experimental mode that pushes the refresh rate to an impressive 120Hz.
The device boasts a broad horizontal field of view at 110°, complemented by a vertical field of view spanning 96°. Meta has ingeniously integrated Pancake lens technology, making the optical profile 40% slimmer compared to the Quest 2.
In terms of weight, the Quest 3 tips the scales at 515 grams, slightly edging out its predecessor, the Quest 2, which weighed in at 503 grams. The Quest 3 offers flexibility, allowing users to operate it as a standalone device or connect it to a PC using the Quest Link cable or enjoy the freedom of wireless connectivity through Air Link.
Under the hood, it packs the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, a significant upgrade over the Quest 2’s Snapdragon XR2. This powerful System on a Chip (SoC) promises a doubling in graphics processing capability and comes equipped with a generous 8GB of DRAM.
Meta Quest 3 impresses further with its imaging capabilities, featuring two RGB color cameras and depth projectors that enhance the passthrough experience, outperforming both the Quest 2 and Quest Pro.
Additional noteworthy features include integrated 3D spatial audio speakers, customizable head straps for a comfortable fit, Touch Plus controllers with TruTouch haptic feedback, and an advanced hand-tracking system enabled by four IR cameras.
Battery-wise, users can expect an average runtime of approximately 2.2 hours, with a full recharge taking 2.3 hours when using an 18W charger.
The Quest 3 comes with two storage options: a 128GB model priced at USD 500 and a 512GB model at USD 650. Excitingly, pre-orders for the Meta Quest 3 are now open, and the official sales launch is scheduled for October 10, 2023.
