Skyrim Modder Utilizes ChatGPT Feature, Makes NPC Dialogues More Alive
Especially if we talk about the game Skyrim, which we often know its dialogues seem strange. To the point of causing many memes circulating. But what if we can integrate this artificial intelligence into the 15-year-old Skyrim game.
The answer is yes. This was developed by a modder Art From The Machine who integrated OpenAI’s artificial intelligence into the Skyrim VR game. With this integration, NPCs can remember our previous answer choices and even if we ask random questions, they can still answer them according to context.
The modder used the xVASynth software to turn text into sound which would later be used for NPCs. Players can dialogue with NPCs through a mic and the NPCs can answer accordingly.
The dialogue spoken is also quite realistic thanks to AI technology like ChatGPT. He can even describe how long a store in the game will close based on time and ask NPCs to accurately describe the item being pointed out by the player.
The modder even included a feature to remember conversations so they could remember what had been asked and answer accordingly. Although he used ChatGPT, Art From the Machine modder said there is actually better software for this job such as Langchain. He plans to implement this software in the future.
Indeed, with the application of AI in the form of dialogue in games, it can make the game more alive. In the future, we may see many games using features like this in the game officially and not in mod form.
Art From the Machine’s mod is not yet available for download at the moment. Considering that the modder still wants to continue polishing and adding various features to the mod he is working on. In addition to Skyrim, the game Mount & Blade: Bannerlord previously also received a similar mod. So this is not the first time a game has received such a mod.
