Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 hasn’t been announced yet, but rumors about Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 have already started circulating. It is said that Qualcomm will be using Nuvia processors for its flagship chipset, which is likely to be released in 2024.
Revealed by renowned leaker Digital Chat Station, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is said to have the model number SM8750 with a 2+6 core configuration, consisting of two prime cores and six performance cores. What’s interesting here is the use of Nuvia processors for the first time in Qualcomm chipsets.
For those who are not familiar, Nuvia is a chip startup that was acquired by Qualcomm in 2021 to reduce their reliance on ARM for CPU in Snapdragon chipsets. Nuvia has even developed their own architecture called Phoenix.
Qualcomm already has its own custom processors called Kryo, but these processors are still based on ARM’s Cortex cores in essence. If the reports are true, then the upcoming SD8 Gen 4 will use processors that are designed from scratch, including the cores, by Nuvia.
However, it should be noted that these rumors are still very early, especially considering that the possible release of Snapdragon Gen 4 is still quite far away, at least in 2024. Nonetheless, we might first see the performance of Nuvia processors, named Oryon, in Windows laptops expected to launch in 2023.
