Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and AR1 Gen 1 for a New Wave of MR/VR Headsets

Qualcomm has just unveiled its latest cutting-edge MR (Mixed Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) headset platforms, namely the Snapdragon XR Gen 2 and AR1 Gen 1. These platforms are poised to revolutionize the MR and VR experience by making it accessible on slimmer and more lightweight devices, some of which no longer rely on external batteries.

The Snapdragon XR Gen 2 platform stands out with a series of remarkable enhancements. Compared to its predecessor, it boasts a GPU performance that’s 2.5 times more powerful and a staggering eightfold increase in artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

This advanced platform can accommodate up to 10 cameras and sensors, providing dual 3K displays and integrating the latest Spectra ISP technology. This extensive feature set positions it as the go-to choice for sophisticated MR and VR devices.

In contrast, the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 is a specialized solution tailored for lightweight smart glasses with MR functionality. Beyond allowing users to effortlessly record and stream from these glasses, it excels in real-world visual searches and translations.

Both platforms are the result of a collaboration with Meta and are set to make their debut in Meta’s devices later this year. Notably, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform will power the Meta Quest 3, while the Snapdragon AR1 platform will underpin the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Beyond Meta, other device manufacturers will soon have the opportunity to harness these cutting-edge chips in their own creations, with the release of devices featuring these platforms expected to kick off in 2024.
