Review of Motorola Edge 40 as a Top-Class Killer, Worth It to Buy?

The Motorola Edge 40 is a smartphone that combines premium hardware with a very aggressive price in the upper mid-range segment.

Motorola refers to the Edge 40 as its flagship killer, and at a price of Rs. 29,999 in India, it offers many best-in-class features.

Here is a review of the Motorola Edge 40:

Motorola makes an eco-friendly move when it comes to the retail box. Fortunately, this is limited to packaging materials consisting of plastic-free wraps, recyclable box cover, and soy-based ink for print text.

Inside the box, you get a charger and a USB Type-C cable. The company has also bundled a transparent hard case along with some documents and SIM removal tool with the Edge 40.

Regarding the phone itself, the Motorola Edge 40 has been launched in two versions. The color we have is called Nebula Green, which comes with a vegan leather back panel.

There is also the Eclipse Black variant with a vegan leather back, and the Lunar Blue color with an acrylic PMMA coating that essentially looks like glass but is made of plastic.

The Motorola Edge 40 is quite slim with a thickness of 7.58mm and weighs only 171g. It is worth noting that the blue variant with the plastic back is slightly slimmer and lighter.

The metal frame adds a premium touch to the Edge 40 and enhances comfort in hand. Unlike most phones out there, the Motorola Edge 40 features curved edges and a curved back, making it comfortable to hold.

The phone is also rated IP68 and claimed to be the world’s thinnest 5G smartphone with official water and dust resistance certification. Particularly, it is also the most affordable IP68-rated smartphone in India at present.

On the front, the Motorola Edge 40 features a 6.55-inch pOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate. The curved edge display has a hole-punch cutout at the top for the 32-megapixel front camera. The full-HD+ display is HDR10+ certified and claims to offer a peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits.

The Motorola Edge 40 has a dual-camera setup on the back. It features a 50-megapixel main camera with an f/1.47 aperture, the widest in its segment. In theory, this will help capture more light while maintaining fast shutter speeds.

There is also a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera with autofocus, which means it can be used for macro shots as well. Additionally, the Edge 40’s rear camera setup can capture portrait mode images at 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm. We will test how well this feature works in the full review.

Under the hood, there is the MediaTek Dimensity 8020 SoC based on a 6nm fabrication process. The device is equipped with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage in India.

It also packs a decently sized 4,400mAh battery with support for 68W TurboPower fast charging out of the box. Additionally, the Edge 40 also supports 15W wireless charging.

In terms of software, the Motorola Edge 40 runs on MyUX skin based on Android 13. It offers a near-stock Android experience with some added customization and personalization features on top.

There are also some neat productivity, security, and connectivity features such as ThinkShield, Ready For, and more, which we will discuss in the full review, coming soon on Gadget 360.
