Samsung Extends Partnership with AMD for GPU Licensing on Exynos

Samsung has announced an extension of its partnership with AMD regarding mobile GPU development. This means that the next generation flagship Exynos chipset will still use a GPU based on the AMD RDNA architecture.

The partnership was first announced in 2019, with Samsung subsequently introducing the XClipse 920 GPU based on AMD RDNA 2 architecture on the Exynos 2200 last year. For information, XClipse on Exynos is the first mobile GPU with ray tracing and variable rate shading (VRS) features.

Indeed, Samsung was not successful enough with the Exynos 2200, which was also the first chipset with AMD GPU. This was due to the reported performance and temperature issues faced by users of the Samsung Galaxy S22 series with the Exynos version at the time.

According to several reports from Korea recently, Samsung is said to be developing the Exynos 2400 SoC for the Galaxy S23 series next year and will try to fix the problems that occurred in the previous generation. However, the Galaxy S24 with Snapdragon is still Samsung’s top priority.

Samsung’s decision to only use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 on this year’s Galaxy S23 series has sparked opinions that they will abandon the Exynos chipset on their flagship phones. Nevertheless, this extension of the partnership with AMD clearly indicates otherwise.

It seems that Samsung is not ready to give up on their own flagship chipset just yet. Will the Exynos 2400 be able to compete with the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3? It’s interesting to wait and see.
