Samsung to Launch Sleep Apnea Detection Feature in Galaxy Watch

Samsung has officially confirmed the upcoming release of a Sleep Apnea Detection feature designed to identify breathing disturbances during sleep. This innovative functionality is set to debut on the Galaxy Watch5 and Watch6 Series devices, offering users a potentially life-enhancing health monitoring tool.

The Sleep Apnea Detection feature has received certification from South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, underscoring its credibility and reliability as a health-focused technology.

How Sleep Apnea Detection Works

Equipped with the BioActive sensor, the Galaxy Watch will have the capability to monitor users’ blood oxygen levels throughout their sleep cycles. This sophisticated feature will analyze the variations in blood oxygen levels, identifying instances of apnea or hypopnea, and calculating the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI).

To provide accurate insights, this cutting-edge functionality will require users to complete at least two sleep tracking sessions, each lasting more than 4 hours. Following the analysis, users will receive comprehensive sleep reports, accessible via the Samsung Health Monitor app.

Not the Pioneer, but a Significant Addition

While Samsung’s introduction of Sleep Apnea Detection is indeed noteworthy, it’s important to note that this feature isn’t the first of its kind in the world of smartwatches. Huawei, for instance, already incorporated a similar capability into their latest smartwatch, the Watch GT 4 Series.

The Significance of Addressing Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a prevalent global health concern, characterized by the alarming phenomenon of individuals momentarily ceasing to breathe during their sleep. This condition can lead to a reduced supply of oxygen to the body and give rise to various health complications, including hypertension, cardiac disorders, strokes, and cognitive impairments.

Samsung’s initiative to integrate this feature into their wearable technology reflects the industry’s commitment to enhancing users’ overall well-being through advanced health monitoring tools.
