SpaceX and Globalstar Partner with Apple to Enhance iPhone SOS Feature

SpaceX and Apple’s satellite partner, Globalstar, have forged a collaboration aimed at launching a fleet of new satellites. These satellites are slated to play a pivotal role in bolstering the communication capabilities for Apple’s emergency SOS feature on iPhones.

This partnership entails a substantial contract valued at $64 million, involving the deployment of 17 cutting-edge low-earth orbit satellites, all set to take to the skies in 2025. Remarkably, Apple is shouldering the lion’s share, covering 95 percent of Globalstar’s expenses concerning these satellites, which encompasses the intricate launch procedures.

In exchange for Apple’s substantial investment, Globalstar has committed to dedicating a substantial 85 percent of its existing and future satellite network capacity to cater to Apple’s iPhone devices. Moreover, Globalstar will undertake the responsibility of both provisioning and maintaining these satellite systems.

This strategic venture follows Globalstar’s previous acquisition of satellite equipment worth a staggering $327 million from a Canadian firm, ahead of the iPhone 14 Series launch. Apple stepped in to financially support Globalstar with a loan amounting to $252 million for this endeavor.

The emergency SOS feature on iPhones has already been rolled out in numerous regions, spanning the United States, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, and more. Anticipated eagerly, this life-saving feature is poised to become an integral part of the forthcoming iPhone 15 Series, expected to hit the market in the near future.
