Spotify Explores Generative AI for Playlist Creation

Spotify is once again venturing into the realm of artificial intelligence within its platform. Following the introduction of the DJ AI feature earlier this year, there are indications that Spotify is developing a Playlist AI feature, allowing users to craft playlists based on text or prompts.

The revelation came via Chris Messina, a tech veteran known for coining hashtags, who shared a screenshot of code snippets within the Spotify app. These snippets contained references to a “Playlist AI” code.

Furthermore, another line of code hinted at the possibility of “Get playlists based on your prompts,” implying that playlists could be generated based on user-entered prompts or text descriptions. This feature is speculated to be Spotify’s version of ChatGPT.

When questioned by TechCrunch, a Spotify spokesperson remained tight-lipped about the Playlist AI feature. The Swedish music streaming giant stated that there were no new features or developments they could currently share.

Resembling Spotify’s Niche Mixes? Interestingly, Spotify already boasts a feature called Niche Mixes, which bears some resemblance to the description of Playlist AI. Niche Mixes allows users to generate algorithmic mixes based on keywords entered in the search bar.

However, Spotify clarifies that Niche Mixes doesn’t employ AI technology; instead, it relies on their personalization algorithms. If Playlist AI comes to fruition, it appears poised to offer a more sophisticated alternative to Niche Mixes.

Much like ChatGPT, the envisioned concept involves playlists with more detailed descriptions, promising more tailored song recommendations. It’s an enticing notion, and we eagerly await its potential realization.
