The debut of laptops featuring SSDs equipped with PCIe 5.0 interfaces is anticipated to occur approximately a year from now.

According to experts at SiliconMotion, the introduction of laptops equipped with solid-state drives boasting PCIe 5.0 interfaces is expected towards the conclusion of the upcoming year.

Among these SSDs, some will be based on the recently unveiled SiliconMotion SM2508 controller. This controller supports impressive data transfer rates of up to 14 GB/s and can deliver performance levels of up to 2.5 million IOPS, all while maintaining a power consumption of merely 3.5 W. The efficiency in power usage is particularly crucial for mobile SSDs.

The innovative controller is produced using 6 nm process technology at TSMC facilities and features a dual-core processor with Cortex-R8 cores.

Currently, there are laptops available in the market that are technically compatible with SSDs featuring PCIe 5.0 interfaces, such as select recent models from MSI. However, MSI itself installs drives with PCIe 4.0 interfaces in these laptops due to their cost-effectiveness and significantly lower heat generation.
