Amidst recent challenges faced by the social media and micro-blogging giant Twitter, resulting in a less-than-pleasant user experience, Threads, introduced by Meta as an extension of Instagram, seemed to infuse a breath of fresh air into the social media landscape.
However, disappointingly, despite its positioning as a direct competitor to Twitter (now rebranded as “X”), Threads has suffered a significant decline in its active user base, according to an analysis conducted by Similar Web.
Initial reports revealed that Threads managed to accumulate a global user count of approximately 49.3 million active users by July 7, 2023. Yet, shockingly, within a mere month, this figure nosedived to a meager 19.3 million active users.
Stateside, Threads enjoyed its peak popularity with a daily active user count of 2.3 million by July 7. Regrettably, this number dwindled considerably to just 576,000 daily active users by August 7. Furthermore, users were found to spend an average of only 7 minutes per day on the Threads application.
In stark contrast, Twitter (X) boasts a staggering 100 million-plus daily active users on its Android platform alone, with users spending an average of approximately 25 minutes per day engaged on the platform.
What factors have contributed to this shift? It’s speculated that while Threads was introduced as a viable alternative to Twitter (X), it still lacks certain features and the seamless accessibility that Twitter, a veteran platform with over a decade of experience, offers. Thus, a direct comparison between a platform with a long-standing presence and an application in its infancy would be somewhat unfair.
The future of Threads remains uncertain. Only time will reveal whether the platform can leverage its potential to introduce captivating features that can reclaim the interest of users in the foreseeable future.
