Xiaomi has taken the wraps off its much-anticipated foldable smartphone, the Mix Fold 3. This third-generation foldable device from Xiaomi showcases a series of enhancements compared to its predecessor, most notably in terms of its notably slimmer profile.
When closed, the Mix Fold 3 measures a mere 10.86mm in thickness, a noticeable reduction from the 11.2mm thickness of the Mix Fold 2 introduced the previous year. For perspective, the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 boasts a folded thickness of 13.46mm. Notably, the Mix Fold 3 has yet to outpace the sleekness of the Honor Magic VS 2, which boasts a thickness of just 9.6mm when its screen is closed.
Upon being unfolded, the Mix Fold 3 impressively touts a thinness of approximately 5.4mm. Xiaomi elaborates that this feat in thinness is made possible by a pioneering hinge design and an internally developed vertical motherboard configuration.
The innovative hinge design plays a pivotal role in enhancing the flexibility and durability of the Mix Fold 3. The inclusion of 14 micro-hinges enables the Mix Fold 3 to be bent at angles spanning from 45 to 135 degrees. Remarkably, the device is engineered to withstand an impressive 500,000 open-close cycles.
Design-wise, the changes are evident. The most conspicuous transformation is observed in the camera module, which has been significantly enlarged to accommodate a quartet of cameras. Intriguingly, the Mix Fold 3 showcases an elegant fusion of glass and composite fiber materials for its back panel, elevating its aesthetic to a heightened level of luxury.
Under the Hood: Xiaomi Mix Fold 3’s Specifications
In terms of specifications, the Mix Fold 3 boasts an expansive 8.02-inch AMOLED panel for its internal display, complemented by a secondary 6.56-inch external screen. Powering this foldable device is an overclocked variant of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, coupled with a potential 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM and the option of up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage.
The camera system also draws attention. With the expertise of Leica, the Mix Fold 3 incorporates a quadruple-camera setup. Noteworthy inclusions are a 50MP OIS Sony IMX800 sensor as the primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP OIS periscope lens capable of impressive 5x optical zoom.
Fueling the device is a 4,800mAh battery, an upgrade from its predecessor’s 4,500mAh, all while maintaining its slimmer form factor. Charging is no hassle either, with support for 67W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Software-wise, the Mix Fold 3 comes preloaded with MIUI 14, built upon the foundation of Android 13.
Exclusive to China for Now
It’s important to note that, similar to its predecessors, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is exclusively intended for the Chinese market. As of now, Xiaomi has not unveiled any plans to introduce this foldable marvel to global audiences.
As for the price point, the Mix Fold 3 comes with a starting price of 8,999 Yuan for the base model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Meanwhile, the top-tier variant, offering 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, is available for 10,999 Yuan.
