While YouTube has long been synonymous with video streaming, it’s not content to remain confined within that box. The platform has been steadily diversifying its offerings, and its latest endeavor, known as “Playables,” signals a foray into the world of gaming.
However, it’s important to temper expectations; Playables is a far cry from the now-defunct, ambitious cloud gaming venture, Stadia, which Google shuttered last year. Instead, Playables are bite-sized, casual games integrated directly into your YouTube experience.
Recent reports from Gizchina reveal that YouTube has initiated testing of the Playables feature, though only a select few users have the privilege of trying it out. YouTube itself has confirmed the existence of this new feature, noting that testing commenced on September 5, 2023.
Playables manifest as a dedicated tab positioned alongside the usual content on the YouTube homepage. However, it’s important to stress that this tab is currently accessible only to those fortunate enough to be part of the testing group. Interestingly, Playables appear to be available across both desktop and mobile platforms.
One of the games that users can explore is called “Stack Bounce,” a seemingly light-hearted challenge involving guiding a ball through a hoop. It presents the kind of diversion that can be enjoyed during a quick break at your computer or while leisurely scrolling on your smartphone.
As of now, YouTube has not divulged any plans for the broader rollout of Playables. It seems that the platform is taking a cautious, step-by-step approach to gauge the reception and potential of this new gaming feature.
