Recently, in September 2022, NVIDIA, led by CEO Jensen Huang, introduced a new feature called RTX Remix that allows modders to easily add Ray Tracing features to old games.
These games are those that still use DirectX 8 and DirectX 9, and with this feature, modders can add several RT features found in modern games. This implementation allows modders to take advantage of the features provided by NVIDIA openly or as open source.
NVIDIA RTX Remix Brings RT Features to DX8 and DX9 Games
With NVIDIA RTX Remix, modders can add path tracing, DLSS 3, NVIDIA Reflex, and AI-based HD textures to the game. These assets can be exported to third-party applications such as Blender, Unreal Engine, or NVIDIA’s own software, NVIDIA Omniverse.
Not only RT features, with RTX Remix, modders can also change several aspects of the game, such as changing camera positions, making fire animation effects more realistic, and smoke that looks more authentic, and even adding VR features.
As demonstrated by NVIDIA using the game The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, a game enhanced with Remix looks significantly different from the original. The usage is also quite simple, requiring just a few clicks of a button.
Ray Tracing Runtime Source Code Now Available on GitHub
However, the toolkit for its application is not yet released at the moment, and NVIDIA promises it will be available soon. A real example of a game that has been released using Remix Runtime is Portal with RTX, which purely utilizes enhancements from Remix.
The source code for the Runtime is now available on GitHub and can be tried out starting from now.
