Dropbox Expresses Displeasure! Ends Unlimited Storage Feature

In a surprising move, the cloud storage giant Dropbox has announced the discontinuation of its unlimited storage feature within the Advanced package. The driving force behind this decision is the rampant misuse of this once-unrestricted service.

This development comes as no trivial matter, as Dropbox’s platform has been exploited for various purposes, including cryptocurrency mining, storage pooling, and even the resale of storage services.

The necessity for this action arises from the fact that Dropbox has faced financial setbacks due to the widespread abuse of the unlimited storage offering.

Transitioning to a New Era with the Advanced Package

Dropbox is embarking on a transformative journey by shifting to a usage-based model. Existing users are being smoothly migrated to the revamped Advanced package, starting from November 1st, with a considerate 30-day notice period.

According to Dropbox’s insights, an astonishing 99 percent of its Advanced package subscribers actually utilize less than 35TB of storage per license. To ease the transition, Dropbox assures these users that they can retain their current storage usage alongside an extra 5TB of shared storage for five years. Remarkably, this enhancement comes without any corresponding price increase from their current plans.

For those exceeding the 35TB mark per license, Dropbox extends a similar offer, albeit for a one-year term. Collaborating closely with these users, Dropbox aims to tailor plans that cater to the long-term needs of all parties involved.

Defining the New Limits

In the upcoming era of Dropbox’s revamped Advanced packages, a universal ceiling of 1,000TB of storage will be established. As of today, purchasers of the Advanced plan inclusive of three licenses will enjoy a cumulative 15TB of shared storage. And, in a user-centric gesture, each additional license will generously contribute an extra 5TB of storage to the mix.

Embracing Additional Opportunities

Starting September 18th for newcomers (and November 1st for existing users), Dropbox is unveiling the option for supplementary storage. This attractive add-on comes at a nominal monthly cost of $10, covering a capacious 1TB of storage on the monthly payment plan. For those who opt for an annual commitment, the cost drops further to a budget-friendly $8 per month.
