The NFC Forum, the organization responsible for Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, has unveiled a new roadmap for the technology until 2028. They aim to develop a new generation of NFC technology with various improvements in capabilities and functionalities.
By now, we are likely familiar with NFC technology, especially for mobile payment features such as e-money, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Additionally, NFC can be used for various other purposes, including access cards, electronic tickets, device tags, and much more.
The upcoming generation of NFC technology will focus on improvements in several aspects, one of which is operating distance. The NFC Forum plans to increase the current operating distance limit, which is only 5mm, by four to six times. This will enable contactless payments and expedite transaction processes.
Moreover, the NFC Forum, which includes technology giants like Apple and Google, also intends to enhance the wireless charging capability of NFC technology from the current 1W to 3W. This will create new opportunities and innovations for NFC devices in the future with improved charging power.
Other items included in the NFC Forum’s roadmap are the Multi Purpose Tap feature, which allows performing multiple tasks with a single tap, and the enhancement of Device-to-Device Communication, enabling users to receive direct payments via smartphones.
